For the second year in a row, the UCSF Department of Psychiatry has been ranked the 12th best center for adult psychiatry in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s annual America’s Best Hospitals survey.

U.S. News’ 2016-2017 rankings were calculated based on ratings by psychiatric specialists across the country over the past three years. UCSF Psychiatry remains the only psychiatric department in Northern California included in the top echelon.

Overall, UCSF was ranked as the 7th best hospital in the nation and earned top-tier status in 15 medical specialties. This high performance placed it once again on the U.S. News Honor Roll, which highlights hospitals that are exceptional in numerous medical specialties. Additionally, UCSF was ranked No. 1 in the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area. U.S. News evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across the country, as well as the results of surveys from approximately 140,000 physicians.

“This achievement is an honor and a wonderful validation of our commitment to providing the best care for our patients, every day,” said Mark R. Laret, chief executive officer and president of UCSF Health, which includes UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and other partner and affiliated hospitals and health care providers throughout the Bay Area. “Our clinical teams strive to provide outstanding care to our patients, including those with the most complex health conditions. It is gratifying to see this hard work recognized through these rankings.”

About U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings

U.S. News' annual rankings, now in their 27th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating patients who need an especially high level of care. The 12 hospitals ranked in adult psychiatry this year were named among the best for difficult cases and procedures by at least 5 percent of the psychiatric specialists who responded to U.S. News surveys in 2014, 2015, and 2016. U.S. News does not currently issue rankings for child and adolescent psychiatry.

The 2016-2017 rankings were published online on August 2 and are available for free at health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/psychiatry.

The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in North Carolina.
