Biography

Alex Bazazi MD PhD (he/him) is an Assistant Professor in the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Assistant Director of the Research and Evaluation Unit at San Francisco General Hospital, and a Research Scientist at the Center on Substance Use and Health at the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

As a psychiatrist and epidemiologist, Alex conducts policy-oriented research on addiction treatment and overdose epidemiology and prevention. He is passionate about harm reduction and health justice, and he has worked to shift systems of care to better serve populations with complex social, psychiatric, and medical needs in San Francisco, nationwide, and internationally. At UCSF, he is a Co-Director of RESHAPE, an interdisciplinary collaboration committed to "Reimagining Equity through Substance use research, Harm reduction, Action, Policy and Empowerment.” The focus of his current research is 1) the epidemiology and prevention of unintentional fentanyl use among people who use stimulants and 2) advancing patient-centered treatments for opioid use disorder in the fentanyl era.

Alex earned his MD and PhD in epidemiology at Yale before completing a research-track adult psychiatry residency at UCSF. Since 2022, he has been on faculty in the Division of Substance Use and Addiction Medicine at San Francisco General Hospital, where he treats patients with substance use and psychiatric disorders. He is board certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine.
