Leaders in Psychiatry: Training Pioneers in Clinical Care, Research, Education, and Public Policy

Welcome to the UCSF Psychiatry Residency Training Program website! We hope you find all the information you need on this site, but if you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us!

Our residency program offers a four-year training opportunity across three main training sites in San Francisco: Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG), the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center (SFVAMC Mental Health Services), the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences' Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building near the UCSF Mission Bay campus. In addition to these three sites, residents also do rotations within the UCSF Medical Center on the UCSF Parnassus, Mount Zion, and Mission Bay campuses.

Our Mission

The UCSF Psychiatry Residency Training Program exists in the context of an ethnically and culturally diverse thriving urban setting in one of the premiere academic university medical centers in the world. Our training includes the biological, psychological and sociocultural aspects of psychiatry and strives to prepare residents for successful leadership careers emphasizing clinical practice, research, education, and advocacy. Our vision is to launch leaders in psychiatry, training pioneers in clinical care, research, education, and public policy.

To that end, our residency program’s mission is to:

  • Create leaders in the field of psychiatry – in academics, research, clinical expertise, and public policy
  • Foster the development of psychiatrists who practice critical thinking and an evidence-based approach in all aspects of their work
  • Maintain scientific excellence and clinical relevance in the didactic program and in the clinical training experiences of residents
  • Promote the professional development, mentoring, and well-being of residents and faculty

Who Are We Looking for at UCSF?

The UCSF Psychiatry Residency Training Program is eager to recruit and train the next generation of leaders in psychiatry. Our philosophy is that leadership comes in many different forms. There are leaders in research, leaders in education, leaders in clinical practice, leaders in clinical administration, and leaders in advocacy and commitment to medically, economically, or educationally disadvantaged populations.

UCSF is committed to welcoming and serving all people, honoring the dignity of each individual without preference or prejudice, in support of its public mission and consistent with our PRIDE values (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) and our Principles of Community.

In accordance with federal and state law and university policy, the University of California does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, health, or disability. The call experience at UCSF provides the skills needed to manage patients overnight on the inpatient psychiatry units, provide consultation to medical-surgical services, as well as the skills needed to assess and manage behavioral emergencies.

When starting call, interns have a tandem experience with a senior resident before progressing to indirect supervision with an attending psychiatrist. The philosophy of call is to promote independence and autonomy while maintaining educational excellence and supervision.
