The UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute are among the nation's foremost resources in the fields of child, adolescent, adult and geriatric mental health. Together they constitute one of the largest departments in the UCSF School of Medicine and the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, with a mission focused on research (basic, translational, clinical), teaching, patient care and public service.

UCSF Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences conducts its clinical, educational, and research efforts at a variety of locations in Northern California, including the UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building; UCSF Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital; UCSF Medical Centers at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay, and Mount Zion; UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland; Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center; the San Francisco VA Health Care System; UCSF Fresno; and numerous community-based sites around the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.

Our faculty members are recognized for their leadership roles in state-of-the-art, comprehensive and compassionate patient care, pioneering research, excellence in training the next generation of leaders, advancing public policy to advance mental health and commitment to diversity. We are dedicated to advancing mental health across the lifespan for the people of the Bay Area and the world.

Compassionate, world-class care for everyone

For more than 80 years, we have provided compassionate and effective psychiatric care for generations of adults, adolescents, and children. At our treatment centers in San Francisco, throughout the Bay Area, and across Northern California, we provide advanced and caring psychiatric treatment services through our inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient programs for a wide range of conditions, such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, and many others.

Exploring the new frontiers of mental health

We are a world leader in research with a deep and distinguished record of achievement spanning more than half a century.

Our world-class psychiatrists, psychologists, and neuroscientists are dedicated to the discovery of better treatments, prevention strategies, and cures for neuropsychiatric disorders. 

Operating in one of the premier biomedical research institutions in the world, our research faculty members are conducting state of the art basic, clinical, and translational research aimed at improving the care of people with mental illness.

Training the next generation of leaders in mental health

Our department is nationally recognized for its many outstanding educational programs in medical school, residency programs and clinical fellowships, research fellowships, and continuing medical education. At UCSF, trainees have the opportunity to engage in transformational research and clinical learning opportunities that prepare them for impactful careers in a wide array of specialities and fields of interest.

Today, our highly accomplished group for 540+ full-time academic faculty and volunteer clinical professors provide guidance and training to 600 medical students, 64 general psychiatry residents, 26 psychiatry fellows, and more than 115 pre- and postdoctoral trainees in clinical psychology, social work, nursing, rehabilitation therapy, genetics, and neuroscience.

Outreach and advocacy to support health and well-being

As part of our public service mission, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is actively engaged locally, regionally, and nationally on a number of important fronts, including issues like climate change, housing, human rights, and combating structural racism, discrimination, and inequality. These efforts are championed and led by our passionate faculty, staff, clinicians, volunteer teachers, fellows, and residents who are interested in creating a better tomorrow for themselves, their patients, and our world.

In addition to supporting public awareness and advocacy activities, our department is committed to facilitating volunteer opportunities that meet the needs of our community partners and help train the next generation of compassionate providers. We firmly believe that our actions in the present can have a positive and meaningful impact for generations to come in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

A hub for academic mental health

Opened in 2022, the UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building is a one-of-a-kind treatment center that aims to redefine mental health services and make a bold statement against stigma. Situated adjacent to UCSF’s Mission Bay campus in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood, the Pritzker Building is one of the few in the nation that combines outpatient mental health care for people of all ages with top-ranking programs in psychiatry and psychology training.
