The UCSF Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program Class of 2027
The UC San Francisco Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program (RTP) revealed that it will welcome a full class of 16 new resident physicians into its Class of 2027 following the announcement of the 2023 Main Residency Match results. The incoming class, which will begin clinical work in late June following orientation activities, is a diverse and highly accomplished group.
Together, the cohort has published more than 154 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including 63 with first-authored publications. They hold interest in a wide variety of sub-specialties, including addiction psychiatry, basic science research, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, global mental health, medical education, public psychiatry, and translational research.
The UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building opened in 2022.
The incoming RTP Class of 2027 will receive educational instruction in the new UCSF Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building, as well department sites at Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, the San Francisco VA Health Care System, and additional community-based sites throughout the Bay Area.
The class contains presidents of student interest groups in psychiatry, Student National Medical Association and Pacific Medical Student Association officers, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Gold Humanism Honor Society members, Fulbright scholars, academic reviewers for literary journals, Teach for America volunteers, managers of free clinics, undergraduate course lecturers, founders of pipeline and mentorship programs for URM students, podcast producers, a class trustee of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees, and a president of the Students for National Health Program.
Additional facts about the UCSF Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program Class of 2027:
- 56 percent are women
- 44 percent are from under-represented minorities in medicine (as defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges)
- 25 percent hold combined MD and PhD degrees and several others have additional master's degrees
- 50 percent received their medical degree from California institutions
- 19 percent intend to participate in the UCSF Psychiatry Research Resident Training Program
- At 16 students, this year's incoming class of psychiatry residents is the largest in California and among the largest in the nation
"This is an absolutely incredible group of individuals," said interim RTP director Alissa Peterson, MD, "and I cannot wait for our department to meet and work with them this June."
According to preliminary figures provided by the National Resident Matching Program, more than 48,000 U.S. and international medical school students and graduates vied for over 40,000 residency positions across all specialties, making this year's match one of the largest in history. Of those, 2,173 applicants were offered residency positions in psychiatry and psychiatry-related programs. Since 2019, the total number of first-year psychiatry residency positions offered nationwide has increased by 23.7 percent.
