Hall named an inaugural Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco Fellow

By Nicholas Roznovsky

UC San Francisco Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry Sharon M. Hall, PhD, has been appointed as an inaugural Fellow by the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco (SRNT). She will join 29 other recipients of SRNT’s major triennial research awards and members of its Past Presidents of the Society in the inaugural cohort of SRNT Fellows.

The status of Fellow is a distinction conferred by the Society on members in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field having to do with the generation of new and useful knowledge. Meritorious accomplishments include scientific contributions to research, as well as clinical practice, public health, public policy, regulation, and/or legislation. Significant accomplishments in dissemination of science and exemplary service to the society were also considered. The program is intended to be prestigious and to appropriately and inclusively recognize all SRNT members who have achieved this level of excellence.

Hall has been a faculty member at UCSF since 1976, conducting research on the treatment of drug abuse – particularly tobacco dependence – and better understanding the processes of change through randomized clinical trials and related studies. She is especially interested in the treatment of comorbidities in special populations, and the complexities that comorbidities introduce into treatment. She previously served as a co-leader of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center's Tobacco Control Program.

She has been previously honored by SRNT with the Ove Fernö Award for Clinical Research in 2007 and an SRNT Service Award in 2013. In 2003, Hall received the UCSF Psychiatry George Sarlo Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Ten years later, in 2013, she was selected to receive a special Certificate of Appreciation from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
