UC San Francisco Professor of Clinical Psychiatry Ellen Haller, MD, was honored with the 2017 American Psychiatric Association (APA) Assembly Award for Excellence in Service and Advocacy during the 170th APA Annual Meeting in San Diego. She was presented with the award during the Women of the Assembly meeting from APA Women's Caucus President Maureen Sayres Van Niel, MD.
She was recognized by Van Niel for her "outstanding work as a female member of the APA whose work exemplifies excellence as a pioneer in the treatment of women and LGBTQ community."
Haller has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry since 1988, serving in a number of key roles throughout her career, including directing the Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital (LPPH) Adult Psychiatry Clinic (2003-2007; 2013-present), UCSF Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program (2008-2012), WomenCare Mental Health Clinic (1997-2003), mental health projects for the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health (1998-2007), UCSF Psychiatry Program for Women (1998-2007), UCSF Lesbian Health & Research Center (2006-2016), and the LPPH LGBT Psychiatry Clinic (2012-present).
In addition to her clinical and education work, Haller has been a dedicated mentor for numerous junior colleagues, with a specific focus on psychiatric educations and the unique issues faced by women and LGBTQ faculty. Among her numerous previous honors are the UCSF Chancellor Award for LGBTQI Leadership (2007), the Association of Gay and Lesbian Psychiatrists' Barbara Gittings Award (2011), UCSF Lesbian Health Research Center Clinician of the Year (2006), the UCSF/LPPI Alumni Faculty Interdisciplinary Achievement Award (2003), and twice being named a UCSF Champion of Diversity (2007 and 2009).
