The UC San Francisco Academic Senate has announced that associate professor of clinical psychiatry Christina Mangurian, MD, MAS, has been selected to receive their 2018 Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the associate rank. The award has been bestowed annually since 2009 to recognize and celebrate excellence in faculty mentoring, an essential component to faculty success and institutional excellence.

Mangurian is the Department of Psychiatry's vice chair for diversity and director of the UCSF Public Psychiatry Fellowship at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, as well as the UCSF Program of Research on Mental Health Integration Among Underserved and Minority Populations (PReMIUM) based at the UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP). She joined the department's faculty in 2009 and has been a core faculty member at CVP since 2014.

She also serves as the chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities. In 2015, she took part in the White House’s Forum on Excellence and Innovation through Diversity in the STEM Workforce and was also named a UCSF John A. Watson Faculty Scholar. Last year, Mangurian was the recipient of the UCSF Chancellor Award for Advancement of Women.

All faculty in the Ladder Rank, In Residence, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical, and Adjunct series with appointments at 50% or more time (at UCSF or its affiliates) are eligible for nomination. The Distinction In Mentoring Award Selection Committee is appointed by each school's associate deans and is chaired by a member of the Committee on Academic Personnel. UCSF faculty or fellows may nominate and write letters of support for UCSF faculty for the Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Awards.

Joining Mangurian as 2018 Academic Senate award recipients will be:

  • Distinction In Mentoring Award for faculty at the rank of full professor: Kenneth E. Covinsky, MD (Dept. of Medicine)
  • Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF five years or fewer: Binh An P. Phan, MD (Dept. of Medicine)
  • Distinction in Teaching Award for faculty at UCSF more than five years: Jeffrey Kohlwes, MD, MPH (Dept. of Medicine)

Recipients of the award receive an award plaque, an honorarium and are recognized by the Academic Senate at a campus-wide ceremony held each spring. This year's ceremony held Tuesday, May 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the Lange Room in the UCSF Library on the Parnassus campus. Awardees, colleagues, friends, and family are welcome to attend.
