CAP Fellowship Program Public Track

The UCSF Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program Public Track is a specialized track within the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP) Fellowship Program that emphasizes clinical training in community psychiatry settings and scholarly work on public systems of care for children. CAP fellows in this track have increased exposure to public sector rotation sites (including UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, and San Francisco County clinics), additional didactics on public psychiatry, and enhanced supervision in completing a scholarly project on a public child psychiatry topic.

Who should apply?

Applicants who are interested in public and community child psychiatry are encouraged to rank this track using a separate ACGME NMRP number, 1062405F2.

What makes this track special?

The Public Track is a partnership between the UCSF Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship and the UCSF Public Psychiatry Fellowship. While other programs may provide an emphasis on public psychiatry clinical training, the UCSF Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Public Track provides specialized didactics, leadership development, and mentored scholarly project time—alongside fellows in the UCSF Public Psychiatry Fellowship—in addition to public sector clinical experiences in child and adolescent psychiatry.

What's involved?

Public Track fellows attend didactics on the history and organizational structure of public psychiatry, recovery, evidence-based psychosocial rehabilitation models, management, forensic topics, integration of care, homelessness, and advocacy. Additionally, fellows are provided with a public psychiatry-specific research supervisor, a research assistant, and funding to present their work at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting in May. Clinically, Public Track Child fellows are preferentially assigned public sector rotation sites, including UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, and San Francisco County clinics.
