State Lab postdoctoral scholar Vanessa Hus Bal, PhD, was named as the newest recipient of the Marquis Award by the University of Michigan’s Department of Psychiatry for her doctoral dissertation exploring the influence of non-Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) behaviors on the assessment and diagnosis of ASD in children.

Patricia Areán, PhD, has been invited by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous Systems Disorders to speak at its upcoming meeting on February 24 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.

UCSF hosted leading minds from Boston Children’s Hospital, Emory University, Harvard Medical School, MIT, Stanford University, Yale University, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Simons Foundation last week for a full-day seminar devoted to exploring progress in diagnostics, neuroimaging, therapeutics, genomics and neurobiology relating to autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

With the passing of Robert S. Wallerstein, MD, on December 21, 2014, a distinguished career as a psychiatrist, psychotherapy researcher, and psychoanalytic leader was brought to a close, leaving a legacy of a widened scope of theory and technique in the psychological sectors of psychiatry.

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) announced that Victor I. Reus, MD, was elected 2015 Vice Chair of the ACCME during its most recent annual meeting of the Board of Directors in Chicago.

Second-year CAP fellow Karen Mu, MD, PhD, has been selected by the Northern California Regional Organization of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (NC-ROCAP) as the recipient of the 2015 Aubrey W. Metcalf Memorial Prize for the best paper related to the mental health of children written by a medical student or psychiatric resident.

Four department trainees have been selected to present their scholarship and research at Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds events later this year as part of a series designed to highlight the work of senior trainees at or near the end of their training and help launch their academic careers.

The Learning for Early Careers in Addiction and Diversity (LEAD) Program at SFGH, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), is designed to provide early-stage researchers from underrepresented racial/ethnic minority backgrounds in the fields of biomedical and behavioral sciences with the necessary skills and guidance to help them succeed as future investigators in the substance abuse treatment research field.

On January 21, 2015, UCSF will host a day-long symposium highlighting recent advances in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) at Genentech Hall on the Mission Bay campus.
